Arsene Wenger reveals why he has not yet returned to Arsenal since his sacking because he thought it was best to have a clean break from the club.

The Frenchman was the manager of The Gunners for over 22 years, foreseeing an amazing period in their history following the move from Highbury to The Emirates.

His greatest historic achievement was leading Arsenal’s 2004 ‘Invincibles’ to the Premier League title without losing a match throughout the season, but that proved to be the peak of his career during that period.

Wenger was eventually sacked from his duties by the Arsenal board in the summer of 2018 after failing to apply a serious challenge for the title for several seasons.

Since his departure, the 70-year-old is yet to visit the club, despite still being held in high esteem there.

“I will go there one day,” Wenger told The Times.

When asked if he has been invited, he responded: “Yes. But I felt it was better of to cut out completely. It was difficult at the start, of course, after taking my club as long as I did. But I thought it’s better to watch from a distance.”

Wenger has since being appointed to work for FIFA as head of global football development, but revealed recently that he still watches every Arsenal game on television as a fan.

Discussion has also grown to the prospect of Arsenal putting up a statue in honour of his work, having won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups under his management.

But considering his relationship with Arsenal, Wenger stated recently that he now has “no relationship at all with the club”.

Even before some sections of Arsenal fans were protesting for Wenger’s exit, there were suggestions that he could be promoted into an executive role so as to continue his good work behind the scenes.

However such an offer was never forthcoming for Arsenal’s most successful manager in their history.

Interviewed on why he wasn’t kept on, Wenger replied: “I don’t know. I have always wanted to play a part in the club, but I could understand that at the start it’s important that we take a complete distance.”

When further asked if he would have stayed around in a backroom role, his answer was certain.

“I would have done that, yes.”
