Two weeks following the reopening of the economy by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the southern state on Saturday recorded 1,801 new confirmed cases covid-19 infections whicch is the single-highest increase in cases since the pandemic began.

734 out of the new cases are from Potter and Randall counties. “These counties’ new confirmed cases are massively from a certain testing of employees at meat plants around the locality. We are expecting more test results from plants,” The Texas Department of Health tweeted.

As of May 17, Texas features a total of 45,198 COVID-19 cases, with 1,272 deaths and 25,454 recoveries. Before the weekend, Texas had never reported over 1,500 cases in at some point . Over the past week, the state has been recording an estimate of 1,220 cases each day.  However, businesses into non-essentials are still open as Governor Greg Abbott’s phased reopening plan.

The surge in cases can partly be attributed to an epidemic among the meatpacking industry in Amarillo. Following the spike announcement, Abbott released a press release saying that coronavirus response teams that were sent to Armarillo earlier this month are increasing testing within the area and other measures to contain the outbreak.

“That is the reason why I set up the platform, Surge Response Teams,” the governor said. “By instantly arranging resources and supplies to those areas with high risk of coronavirus pandemic, we’ll detect the positive cases, quarantine the individuals and make sure that any outbreak is instantly contained, which is a strategy being adopted in Amarillo.”

The surge surfaced as Texas continues to enforce with reopening its economy and both businesses such as non-essential and essential . Abbott permitted malls, cinemas, bar and retails stores to reopen on May Day with social distancing, becoming the first most populated state to adopt this at this time.

Hair salons and barbershops across the state open their doors on May 8 as a result of Texas’ phased reopening plan. Next, fitness outlets and other such businesses are going to be allowed to resume on Monday with capacity limits.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told Congress earlier in the week that states that prematurely reopen will experience “little spikes which may become outbreaks.”

Despite the rise in cases, Abbott has maintained that Texas remains faraway from hitting hospital and ventilator capacity. About 1,790 individuals are currently hospitalized within the state, and quite 17,000 beds are still available to be used.
